What ceiling height does the Vector lamp need?

Requires a ceiling height of 8 ft 6 in to 11 ft 6 in (102 to 138 in). The three light cones are fixed 61.4 in apart on the cable; only the cable above and below them adjusts.

Why are the Vector lamp cones not evenly spaced?

The spacing is deliberate and fixed. The two upper cones face up and the lower cone faces down, staggered so no light source sits at eye level and the light lands on the floor and ceiling.

How do I mount the Vector lamp on a drywall ceiling?

Screw the ceiling fitting into a wood joist with the included black screw, or use a ceiling-rated self-drilling drywall anchor if no joist is available. The included screws alone are not enough for hollow drywall.

How do I set the height of the cones on the Vector lamp?

The cones are fixed on the cable and move together. Loosen the base set screw with the hex key, set the cable between the top of the base cone and the bottom light cone to about 20 in for an 8 ft 6 in ceiling, 24 in for 9 ft, 30 in for 10 ft or 40 in for 11 ft 6 in, tighten, then pull the cable straight at the ceiling fitting.

Three things to know

The cones never move. All three are fixed on the cable. Don't loosen them.
The hex key is only for the base. It fits the set screw on the base cone and nothing else.
Height is set at the base. More cable inside the base lowers the cones. The ceiling fitting only pulls the cable straight.

Before you start

In the box

Base cone with power cord and plug. A hex set screw sits at its collar.

1 black coarse-thread screw, for a wood joist or a drywall anchor.

You need

Step ladder, pencil, tape measure.
Electric drill/driver with a long Phillips bit. The bit has to reach up through the open bottom of the fitting. A long screwdriver works if you drive by hand.
Concrete: hammer drill and a 1/4 in (6 mm) masonry bit.
Wood joist: a stud finder. No pilot hole needed with a driver; a 1/8 in pilot bit if you drive by hand.
Drywall with no joist: one ceiling-rated self-drilling drywall anchor (50 lb class) from the hardware store.

Do not plug in until the lamp is fully mounted.

Pick the spot

Decide where the base cone will stand. It is 4.7 in (120 mm) across and the cord has to reach an outlet. Mark the floor.

Find the point on the ceiling directly above the mark. Hang a weighted string from the ceiling, or use your phone’s level app held against the cable once it is up. Keep the ceiling point at least 3 in from any wall so the 3.1 in (80 mm) light cones clear it. Mark the ceiling.

Mount the ceiling fitting. Choose your ceiling.

The fitting is hollow. In every case the screw goes inside it, pokes out the top, and you drive it from below with an electric driver or a long Phillips screwdriver through the open bottom.

A Wood joist

Most US homes: drywall over wood joists.

Find a joist with a stud finder. Joists run every 16 or 24 in. If your mark misses one, move the lamp a few inches rather than screwing into bare drywall.
Drop the black screw into the fitting so it pokes out the top.
Hold the fitting flat against the ceiling and drive the screw straight in with an electric driver, through the open bottom of the fitting. No pilot hole needed. Stop when snug; do not overtighten.
Driving by hand? Drill a 1/8 in pilot hole at the mark first, then drive the screw with a long Phillips screwdriver.

B Concrete or masonry

Lofts, many apartments, garages.

Hammer-drill a 1/4 in (6 mm) hole as deep as the anchor is long.
Blow the dust out and tap a yellow anchor in flush.
Drop a silver screw into the fitting so it pokes out the top.
Hold the fitting to the ceiling and drive the screw into the anchor until snug.

C Drywall, no joist

Only if you cannot move the lamp to a joist.

The included screws are not enough for hollow drywall with a straight-down pull.
Install a ceiling-rated self-drilling drywall anchor (50 lb class) at the mark, following its packaging.
Drive the anchor’s own screw, or the black screw if it fits, through the fitting into the anchor.

Set the cone height at the base

Do this on the floor, before the cable goes up.

Lay the lamp out straight on the floor.
Loosen the set screw on the base cone with the hex key. The cable now slides through the top of the base.
Slide the cable until the length from the top of the base cone to the bottom light cone matches your ceiling in the table. Push the extra cable down into the base.
Tighten the set screw.

Feed the cable and pull it straight

Stand the base cone on its floor mark.
Push the free end of the cable up into the bottom of the ceiling fitting until it comes out of the side slot. Hold the button down while you push; the cable slides only while the button is down.
Keep the button down and pull the spare cable out of the side slot until the cable runs straight and the base still sits flat. Release the button to lock.

Spare cable at the top is normal. Coil it beside the fitting, and don't cut it.

Plug in

Route the cord along the baseboard, plug in, switch on. The two upper cones light upward and the lower cone lights the floor.

Why the cones are not evenly spaced

From the top: 19.7 in (500 mm) between the first and second cone, then 41.7 in (1058.5 mm) to the third. The first two face up, the third faces down.

That is deliberate. Each cone hides its light source from the one below it, so you never look straight into a lens from a sofa or a bed, and the light lands on the floor and the ceiling instead of in your eyes. Equal spacing would put one cone at seated eye level on almost every ceiling height.

The spacing is built into the cable and cannot be changed. Requires a ceiling height of 8 ft 6 in to 11 ft 6 in (102 to 138 in).

Fixes

The top cone touches the ceiling

Too much cable sits between the base and the bottom cone. Press the button on the ceiling fitting so the cable goes slack. Loosen the base set screw, push cable down into the base until the length matches the table in step 03, and tighten. Then pull the cable straight at the ceiling.

The bottom cone sits too low

Too little cable sits between the base and the bottom cone. Press the button on the ceiling fitting so the cable goes slack. Loosen the base set screw, slide cable up out of the base until the length matches the table in step 03, and tighten. Then pull the cable straight at the ceiling.

The cones won't slide along the cable

They're fixed by design, 61.4 in from the top cone to the bottom cone. To move all three together, change the cable length at the base, as in step 03.

There's spare cable at the ceiling

That's normal. Coil it beside the fitting. Don't cut it.

The cones sit close to the ceiling

Your ceiling is under 8 ft 6 in. The lamp still works; the fixed cone span just takes up more of the height. On a 96 in ceiling, set about 17 in of cable between the base and the bottom cone. The top cone then sits about 14 in below the ceiling.

The base rocks or the cable sags

Press the button on the ceiling fitting and pull another inch of cable out of the side slot. The cable should run straight, not tight.

The fitting pulled out of the ceiling

It was screwed into bare drywall. It needs a joist (case A) or a ceiling-rated drywall anchor (case C). Patch the hole and remount.

The cable will not slide through the fitting

Press the button fully and keep the cable straight in line with the fitting. Feed the end in from the bottom, not from the side slot.
